Is your membership a leaky bucket?

You go to all the effort of marketing, you pay for the ads, you create a complete sales funnel and finally convert people to become members. But without proper engagement, you could lose your members fast. Slowing growth and wasting much of your hard-earnt marketing money.

You see, many membership site owners are making a big mistake.

They put so much time, effort and money into getting new customers, they’re neglecting their existing members.

Then, over the weeks, months and years, they gradually lose those members. Their membership turns into a leaky bucket.

Why Engagement Matters

What you don’t want is people coming in the top of your funnel but also falling out of the bottom of your site!

Keeping members engaged and active in their membership is the ultimate goal, as it means more profits, more stable cash flow and more people you can help with your offer.

But what does it mean to keep members engaged?

If your members are consistently interacting with your website and its features that’s an ideal level of engagement.

Members will stay with your site if they feel they’re getting value in return for their membership fee. If not, they will lose interest and eventually unsubscribe or let their membership expire – and getting them back is even harder than winning a new client.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to keep your membership engaging…

1 – Make It Easy

Ever tried to use a poorly designed website? How long did that last? Most people give up if they find a website frustrating or they can’t quickly find what they’re looking for. Ensure that your website is easy to use and proactively direct your members where you want them to go. Simple payment processes and user friendly dashboards are a good place to start.

2 – Use A Range Of Mediums

Think memberships are just about delivering your support through text? Bring creativity to your membership site and take advantage of mediums like live calls, video content and interactive online courses. The limit really is your imagination, as you can mix and match the way you deliver your content to find what suits your members best.

3 – Gamify

In a world where Candy Crush exists, gamification is a great way to motivate your members and get them excited to interact with your site regularly. Add rewards, points and leaderboards to your member dashboard to make your members want to check in every day just to make it to their next milestone celebration.

If you’ve ever used the language learning app Duolingo then you can take its gamification as an example. This app encourages subscribers to continue using the app daily to maintain their streak and compete in leaderboards – and it works!

4 – Go Live

Schedule in live calls or lessons with your members. Get them involved in the conversation and looking forward to the next live. Adding this human element can keep people engaged with your site while also establishing your authority. Building trust is a key component to creating that sense of value that will keep your members coming back.

5 – Build A Community

Being a member of your site should feel exclusive, but you don’t want it to get lonely! Build a culture around your members by giving them a forum. Here they can share their experiences, ask for advice from fellow members and seek guidance relating to your membership topic.

Give them a place to connect and share and connect and they will.

6 – Add New Content

The worst thing you could do to your members is leave them with stale content. Whatever you’re helping them with, don’t leave them with a few old resources. There are lots of ways to keep giving them fresh, updated and interesting content, whether it’s through weekly webinars that are added to your member library or ticketed events for high-value talks.

Now you know member retention is the key to stable cash flow for your membership site you can incorporate simple design, a variety of mediums and consistently valuable content to your membership concept.
